Daily Miracles receives American Journal of Nursing
2007 Book of the Year Award
(INDIANAPOLIS) The Honor Society of Nursing,
Sigma Theta Tau International is pleased to announce that Daily
Miracles: Stories and Practices of Humanity and Excellence
in Health Care received an American Journal of Nursing
2007 Book of the Year Award. The judge who selected the book
for the award called it "an inspiring collection of
true stories of exceptional care that illustrate the best
practices of nursing. It "includes stunning photography
and beautiful layout and suggests ways nurses can create
a healing space."
Daily Miracles, written by Jan Boller, RN, PhD,
and Alan Briskin, PhD, and published by the honor society,
is a moving and inspirational collection of personal
stories of compassionate care. Accompanied by Briskin's
stunning photography, Daily Miracles depicts
how 21 nurses transform mundane and frantic situations
into profound acts of caring. The stories, guiding principles
and approaches provide the keys to unlocking both clinical
excellence and patient satisfaction.
"The AJN annual Book of the Year award is the most prestigious
in nursing. Alan Briskin and Jan Boller linked Briskin's
compelling photography with the words of individual nurses
to craft a beautiful book that celebrates the miracles nurses
are privileged to experience each day of their careers," said
Cynthia L. Saver, president of CLS Development, Inc., and
the honor society's book acquisitions editor. "In today's
chaotic, technical health care environment, where the focus
is so often driven by the newest technology, this book reminds
nurses of the most elemental aspects of nursing: caring and
compassion. The authors' guiding principles inspire nurses
to remain committed to excellence in patient care."
Daily Miracles received an AJN 2007 Book of
the Year Award in the Public Interest and Creative Works category.
AJN has been publishing the annual list of the best in nursing
publishing since 1969. Published in the January issue of the
journal, the AJN Book of the Year program is an influential
competition that garners the attention of AJN's more than 300,000
readers, as well as librarians and faculty, who make book purchasing
decisions based upon this award program. The books are selected
by judges with expertise in the topical area.
"I received Daily Miracles and read it through several
times, marveling at the stories and the beautiful accompanying
photographs. Today, I took the book to work to show my staff
the untapped power that lies within each of them," said
Polly Gates, RN, MPA/HSA, FACHE, director, Regional Patient
Care Services Workforce, Kaiser Permanente.
